Whether you’re a UK citizen or even if you’re not, finding somewhere cool to go and something exciting to do during the Christmas period is often right at the top of our “to do” lists. Though many people talk about going on holiday during late December, very few actually reach the booking stage for whatever reason. So, if you’re determined not to stay inside your house this year, and the idea of venturing out into the big wide world sounds more appealing than ever, have a read through this article and i’ll do my best to highlight what I think are some of the coolest Christmas holiday destinations on Earth.
Yes, that’s right, England, Scotland, and Wales became very lively around the Christmas period with huge German markets in Birmingham, parades and grotto’s lining the streets of London, and even the northerners get in on the festive action. Scarborough in particular becomes incredibly more vibrant during the months of November and December, so make sure you don’t overlook Yorkshire as a possible location. Weekend breaks in Scarborough are incredibly cheap, so you should have no trouble finding somewhere to stay without breaking the bank.
Okay so, if the cold weather becomes a little too much for you to handle, why not head around the other side of the world to somewhere a bit more inviting. Australia is on this list, not for it’s Christmas activities, but for what happens between December 25th and the new year. Sydney Harbour is famous for it’s parties, festivals, and amazing firework displays over the festive period, so make sure you don’t miss out on all the fun if you’re considering visiting our Australian brothers and sisters.
If you want to stay within Europe but also experience a totally different culture, hopping on a flight over to the Czech Republic might not be such a bad idea. Many people claim it feels like Christmas in Prague all year round, and it’s easy to see why they’d say that. The temperatures always drop during the evening time, so some thick clothing is definitely needed, but a stroll into the center of the city is all that’s required to find some festive cheer.
Though the people of this city aren’t overly religious, they do like any excuse to have a good old knees-up, so expect 24/7 heavy drinking, loud music, and good vibes.
Most people seem to think that Holland is far too cold to visit during December; however, this really isn’t the case. On the whole the climate in Holland is pretty much exactly the same as in the UK, so it shouldn’t be too much of a shock to the system.
The city of Amsterdam is slices into many different pieces by a truly beautiful canal system (as i’m sure you already know), and although i’d never advise you do this, many local residents gets their blades on and go for a skate every year when they freeze over. This is a really cool sight, and along with the Christmas decorations and the chilly winds, it really does create a fantastic atmosphere that you won’t forget in a hurry.
So don’t be boring this year, do something fun. None of the places on this list are expensive to visit, especially during the cold months – so go for it!
