If you consider yourself to be an avid golf enthusiast, you might well consider traveling a little further than most to find the best courses. Some people even book their annual holidays in locations known for their fantastic, well maintained, greens, traveling all over the world to find the best spots for a round or two.
So, if you fancy a change from your local club, take a quick read through this article and i’ll try to fill you in on some of the most popular and desirable locations for golf courses in the world.
1 – Arizona
Known as “The Grand Canyon State”, Arizona has been incredibly popular with traveling golfers ever since it joined the union in 1912. Though the early courses were nothing to write home about, in the modern day we find some of the most interesting and beautiful greens in America are located within Arizonian borders. With surrounding mountain ranges and barren deserts, it’s unsurprising so many people travel here every year to play golf.
2 – Hawaii
Though you might not think it, Hawaii actually has more golf courses per cubic foot of land than anywhere else in the world – and some of them are truly awe-inspiring. With some of the hottest weather outside of Africa, you might be tempted to forget that these islands are in fact US territory.
3 – Bermuda
Much like Hawaii, Bermuda has a very similar claim to fame in that there are more golf courses than fast food restaurants on the island. Again, the weather here is absolutely fantastic for most of the year, so you’re certain to catch a few rays and get a fantastic tan once you’ve tee’d off. Just make sure you avoid hitting your balls too hard, as even full-sized aeroplanes has been known to disappear forever, so you’re ball is unlikely to fare very well (joke).
4 – Las Vegas
The attractions in Sin City are far more varied than just gambling or watching Celine Dion perform over and over again, in fact, the area is home to some of the coolest desert courses in the world – though you’ll probably want to pick up some new clubs like the Mizuno MP 54 Irons, as you can guarantee you’ll be playing with the best.
5 – Colorado
Nicknamed “The Centennial State” Colorado is home to the southern rocky mountains. As this suggests, golf courses in the area can range into extreme conditions, with some very high up indeed. This is a good thing though, as the higher you go, the less air resistance your ball faces. Some of the longest shots ever recorded were in the mountains of Colorado, so bear that in mind.
6 – Alabama
The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Alabama sports ten courses with accompanying resorts that are joined together by a series of cablecar style transport connections. As one of the most popular golfing havens in the whole of America, this particular complex plays host to well over half a million enthusiasts each year.
7 – Scotland
Finally, how could anyone write a list of golfing destinations without including the country where it all began – Scotland. You’ll find many different quality courses dotted all over the country, but the most impressive by far are located at St Andrews – do not miss out on the chance of visiting these institutions, as some of the greatest golfers in the world are known to train here.
So there you go my friends. Wherever you decide to visit, I’m sure you’ll have an absolutely memorable time!
