What are some of the strangest festivals you can attend this summer? While you may be used to Glastonbury, Reading, and Leeds for music, there are many more festivals that take place in the summer, all of which are considerably weirder. From the wife carrying world championships to cheese rolling and bog snorkeling, strange festivals come in many different shapes and sizes. If you do plan to travel the world taking in these festivals, remember to look into multi trip travel insurance to protect yourself from any unfortunate events.
Wife Carrying World Championships
Held from the 5th to the 6th of July in Finland, the Wife Carrying World Championship does more or less what it says on the tin; men have to carry a wife (or a neighbors wife) around an obstacle course with dry and wet events. The wife in question needs to be at least 108 pounds and over 17.
Roswell UFO Festival
A UFO themed festival, this event runs in the New Mexico town of Roswell from June 29th to July 1st, and represents a celebration of all things extraterrestrial. Roswell was the reported site of an alien landing, and now attracts curious alien hunters every year.
World Championship Bathtub Races
Held in Vancouver on the 22nd of July, the World Championship Bathtub Race festival involves competitors tackling a route from Nanaimo to Vancouver Island; tubs are attached to a boat and an engine and motor. The race has been held since 1967, and represents one of the longest running of strange sports festivals.
Organised in Kettlewell, Yorkshire, this event involves life size scarecrows being designed and displayed around the village. Held in early to mid August, the Scarecrow Festival is either great fun or terrifying, depending on how you feel about scarecrows.
Bog Snorkeling Championships
This event involves competitors diving and swimming through a peat bog in Waen Rhydd in Llanwrtyd Wells, a mid Wales destination with a claim to be the smallest town in the UK. The bog snorkeling championship covers different fancy dress races, as well as male and female events.
Nettle Eating Contest
Part of a charity beer festival held in Devon every year, the Nettle Eating Contest grew out of a competition between local farmers, and has become a slightly stomach churning event in its own right. Competitors have to use festival approved nettles, with recent eating records including a nettle with a length of 26 feet.
Cheese Rolling Festival
One of the staples of Gloucestershire’s festival calendar, despite some criticism of its safety, the Cheese Rolling Festival involves people stumbling down very steep hills in pursuit of a tumbling piece of cheese. The first person to get to the bottom of the hill to claim the cheese is the winner.
A September festival held in Raleigh, North Carolina, Bug Fest probably isn’t for everyone. Organised by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, the festival includes displays of insects, as well as the opportunity to try salads and other dishes with insect ingredients.
Potato Days Festival
A festival held in Minnesota, Potato Days covers everything you could probably think of when it comes to potatoes. Potato peeling, potato sack races, and races with cars powered by potato oil are just some of the festival’s attractions.
